The twist this time being Rovio has combined the typical Angry Birds destruction gameplay with a simplistic form of dashing, pinball mechanics. Of course, Rovio wants Angry Birds Action! to generate revenue, and that’s where BirdCodes come in. Where as Nintendo has used Amiibo and Amiibo cards to unlock new content, Rovio tweaked the formula to use QR codes linked to other brands and advertising to unlock mini-games. You’ll find BirdCodes located on a large range of Angry Birds-branded merchandise. For example, McDonald’s Happy Meals, Pez candy dispensers, Lego sets, and H&M clothing. Walmart and Toys ‘R’ Us will have the codes on display in their stores. When you see a BirdCode you load the game on your phone, scan the code with the camera, and the new content unlocks. Typically this will be a 30-second mini-game. If you want to play again, then you need to scan the code again. Rovio is taking the approach of “you must collect all the things by buying all the things” as a way to get people (kids?) buying more Angry Birds stuff.
