And now Lego architect Steve Mayes has added more of the North East’s buildings to his collection. The photographer has added a model of Newcastle Civic Centre and Gateshead Team Valley to his set. Steve of North Shields, has been faithfully recreating regional landmarks such as the Baltic art gallery and St James Park since 2014. And now the 39-year-old’s work is to be showcased alongside master modeler Warren Elsmore in the ‘Brick History’ exhibition in the New Year. Steve said: “If you told me this a year ago I would be making money from Lego, I would not believe you! “It just goes to show the popularity of Lego. It is a fantastic material to work with, and we have so many iconic structures in the North East to recreate.” Alongside Team Valley trading estate and St James Park, Steve is also planning to build the Civic Centre, the Angel of the North and the Centre for Life itself in time for the exhibition.

The Lego enthusiast has been making architectural models using Lego for the past three years, but only started to realise the potential of his childhood hobby after his detailed recreation of the Baltic was exhibited at Woodhorn Colliery’s BrickPlanet exhibition last May. Paid commissions of the Freeman Hospital’s Maggie’s Centre and the new designs for Tynemouth Outdoor Pool followed, and now he has turned his hobby into architectural modelling business BrickThis, which he hopes he can run alongside his freelance photography work. Steve added: “I feel like I’m in a transition from photography to Lego! It feels like a natural extension of my photography business, which has always been about architecture and places. “I built the Baltic and it generated interest, and I realised there was a market for it. “I think Lego is a fantastic way of representing buildings, and it gets interest from young and the old as they can both relate to it. My models are not massive, so people probably also think they can have a stab at it themselves too.”
